Because the airline lost her luggage, Sarah
was without her contact lens solution (which
she had to check because it was more than 3 oz.
of liquid). We were deep in the jungle of the Osa
Peninsula, hours from the nearest medical assistance
when she woke at 2 a.m. with eyes burning, unable
to see. Was this an infection, some rare blinding
tropical disease? It was a tense and dramatic moment,
insects and howler monkeys screaming in the night.
By morning she was marginally better and we hiked to
a postcard-perfect waterfall and washed away all anxiety.
